BADASS COMIC – TO BE THE MAN : Evil Ain’t Good!
There are certain inalienable universal truths; America is the greatest country of them all, professional wrestling is the king of sports entertainment, to be the man you gotta beat the man, and of course, evil ain’t good.
Life is all about finding a way of coming to terms with this, and making it work in your favor. To Be the Man seamlessly combines these time tested facets of reality, making it the closest thing the world of funny books has to a holy book. And let me tell ya, you don’t wanna be the dummy who crosses over into the afterlife without having read it.
Here’s a brief overview of the story without any spoilers, because I sure as shootin’ wouldn’t wanna bring on the funky bad voodoo mojo that would certainly follow if I were to spill any beans. The main characters are the baby face heavyweight champion of the world Fabulous Frank Hazard, and the ultimate heel, Greg the Gargoyle Grimes.
The Baby Face and the Heel.
It’s the 1980’s, during the heyday of big hair and Southern Championship Wrestling. Frank and Greg are arch enemies, traveling the country and getting over with the wild and crazy fans of the professional wrestling world. Again, no spoilers, but let’s put it this way, things get a little out of control following a particularly rough night of wrasslin’ and our main characters find themselves immersed in a world of evil they never thought existed. As we all know, there is massive overlap between practitioners of the dark arts and wrestling fans. We’ll leave it at that.
Everything about this book is right up my alley. There are clotheslines, piledrivers, magic, characters with shticks, and all the high flyin’, ass kickin’ badass-ery that an American consumer expects and deserves.
Shout out to Jared Vaughan Davis for putting together a story that gives the spectacle of wrestling its proper due.
The art serves as a perfect backdrop to the setting, with a vibrant color scheme and plenty of the high flying action one would expect to accompany a story of this caliber. From the wrestlers to the cars, and the hair to the spectators, Josh Taylor has illustrated a masterpiece thus far. But don’t take my word for it, here are a few samples of the art that makes up this riveting tale.
Two chapters into To Be The Man and I’m hooked. If you are seeking eternal knowledge and the opportunity to live forever as a legend of life, you can purchase the books on Amazon.
