FOOTBALL TEAMS ARE INDIVIDUALS
“The proper level of analysis is the individual.” a quote from Jordan Peterson. To give it memory based context, Peterson was explaining his point of view as a clinical psychologist who is acutely aware of and deeply familiar with statistics concerning the human condition and its behavior. Still, his ability to treat a patient comes down to the individual. Outliers inform the mean, and individuals are often far too complex to be thoroughly nailed down by the DSM based on a questionnaire alone.
This brings me to professional football, and fans affinity for pledging allegiance to a team. A football team is akin to a corporation, in that it has high turnover at the employee level (staff and players), with more solidified ownership. Teams are brands, complete with uniforms and logos. They sell merch, and obtain fans instead of followers in their quest for awareness.
A football team is just a business. And while I love capitalism as much as the next guy, that’s not why I watch football. I watch football because it’s a badass game possessing a chaotic beauty when played well. What I’m saying is, the proper analysis for a football team is the team itself, not its history or current branding strategy.
Call me bandwagon, but I like the Bears this year. Anthony Miller, the rookie wide receiver from Memphis is a player I’ve eyed through college. Another squad I fell in love with was the Baltimore Ravens of the 2000s. I love defense. The Bears were already solid defensively, and added Khalil Mack. Speaking of defensive greatness, Lawrence Taylor is Mack’s best comparison historically. There’s no excuse for not enjoying da Bears.
After spending 20 years under the spell of allegiance to a team, I’ve come to the conclusion feelings change. The 49ers are no longer the 49ers to me, and while I’ll always cherish the fond memories, I can no longer feign emotional investment to the relationship. Go Bears. And when they fall apart, I’ll find an individual squad worth supporting at the level of pure love for the sport of football.
