GREATEST MODERN ATHLETE: LEBRON JAMES, TOM BRADY, OR JOEY CHESTNUT?
The question of sport is an eternal one, which man is the greatest? When it comes to the modern era, three men stand head and shoulders above the rest.
So, who is the greatest athlete of our modern times? Lebron James, Tom Brady, or Joey Chestnut?
Let’s start with LBJ. He is the consensus number one basketball player in the world, has been for some time, and shows no signs of dropping off. Even in a team sport, he wills any old motley crew to the finals by himself. Three championships, nine finals appearances, four NBA MVP awards, while carrying the most complete statline in the history of the game.
Another interesting thing about Lebron is his pure athletic talent. Standing 6’8”, weighing 250 pounds, fast, strong, explosive. It’s hard to imagine Lebron playing a sport and not dominating it. In terms of physical potential, he may be single most talented athlete on the planet, in any sport.
Then there’s Tom Brady, the NFL’s golden boy. He’s half the athlete as Lebron James on a good day, yet continues to maintain the uncontested elite position in one of the most physical non combat sports known to man. He uses a refined skill set and an unheard of attention to detail to continue improving at 40 years old.
Here are the stats; 5 super bowl victories, the most of any quarterback in the history of the NFL. 3 NFL MVP Awards, 4 Super Bowl MVPs, and 13 pro bowl selections. Modeling contracts and a modeling wife, some men have it all. Not exactly an easy guy to compete against.
And finally, there is Joey Chestnut. The only one of the three who competes in an individual sport, and easily the most accomplished. Ten times, count em ten times (Including his world record breaking performance at the 2018 Contest), Joey has risen to the occasion and won the Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Contest, the world championship of Major League Eating.
That’s 3x more titles than Lebron, and double what even the Great Tom Brady has managed.
If greatness is the ability to win, measured in championships, then Joey Chestnut is your guy. Going a little deeper, Chestnut is the MLE’s all time Hotdog and bun leader. He’s captured the glorious title of world champion in 40 other foodstuffs, most notably in chicken wings where he adds another 4 world titles to his belt collection. An absolute master of the craft, Joey Chestnut is more than simply the number one eater of all time, he is the greatest athlete of our generation.
