Clementine, a spoof of Precious, debuted with overwhelmingly negative reviews. Written and directed by controversial funny man Gabriel Utseks, the film has been lambasted as insensitive and unfunny. The movie picks fun at everything from obesity to incest, and critics say it isn’t even worth going through the trouble of pointing out the film’s flaws
Clementine is a 450 pound woman, a fact pointed out directly when she is weighed on a truck scale in the opening scene.
“Four fiddy!” the worker calls out. “Bitch is huge!” everyone laughs, while Clementine stares down at her feet. Georgia Gibbler, the actress and comedian who played Clementine, has always struggled with her weight. In preparation for the role, she added 40 pounds of almost pure fat to her five foot nine inch frame.
“My doctor wasn’t happy about it.” says Gibbler. “Usually, the doctor gives you a note to get out of work. In my case, I had a professional reason to ignore my doctor.” she goes on to recall her daily double dose of Big Mac hamburgers in the months leading up to filming. She compares it to a football player trying to gain weight, and is honest about the fact it made her hate food in general. Since the filming, Georgia has actually lost 80 pounds. Being forced to eat high quantities of low quality food made her appreciate actual food.
Described by critics as lazy, mean, and juvenile, it failed to break half a million dollars on opening weekend. Utseks isn’t upset about the lack of success.
“I was in a weird position. If the movie was successful, I would have made more money but lost faith in humanity.”
says Utseks, smiling at his own failure. “I make art for me, but I’m such an asshole that it isn’t necessarily a good thing when my work resonates with the public.”
