TRANS WOMEN DOMINATING ATHLETICS

TRANS WOMEN DOMINATING ATHLETICS

Estimates vary, but roughly 0.6% of people identify as transgender, and they aren’t all male to female. Despite this impossibly small demographic, trans women have found their niche in dominating women’s sports.

There’s the case of Terry Miller and Andraya Yearwood, who placed 1st and 2nd in the 55 meter dash in the 2019 high school state open indoor track championships. Terry’s time in the event broke the state record. The same girls placed 1st and 2nd in the 100 meter dash in the 2018 state championships. It appears the other high school girls in the competition are competing for bronze.

Another example is Fallon Fox, who fractured the skull of Tamika Brents in route to a TKO victory in a mixed martial arts bout. Or CeCe Telfer, who won the 400 meter hurdles in the NCAA Women’s Track and Field National Championship after competing in the men’s division the previous year. Or Hannah Mouncy, the six foot two, two hundred and twenty pound Australian National Team Handball Player and Australian Rules football competitor. And Tiffany Abreu, the 6’4” professional Brazilian volleyball player who excelled in the sport as a male, before transitioning to the women’s category.

And don’t forget the most famous example, that of Juwanna Mann, who took the WNBA by storm after being kicked out of the NBA.

Is the whole of women’s sport in danger of being taken over by Transgender super athletes? Well, no. Again, only a fraction of a single percent of people identify as transgender, including non athletes. But the spectacle is on, and you’ve gotta feel bad for the biological women unfortunate enough to be matched up in events against high level transgender athletes.

No one wants to see trans women dominating women’s athletics.

This advantage doesn’t exist for every male to female transgender, and we don’t hear the stories of trans women who finish in the middle of the pack. There are even studies showing that after a year of hormone treatment, the biological athletic advantages go away. This may be because not every male can dominate women at the highest level of sport, not even close. Yet, with such obvious outlier examples, you have to wonder if this same logic applies to men with athletic backgrounds who transition to female.

When you can see the answer to the question with your own two eyes, it appears obvious. A response to the conundrum isn’t immediately obvious, as transgender athletes undergoing hormone treatment would be placed at a significant disadvantage if they were to compete against athletes who share their biological gender. Creating a transgender athlete division wouldn’t work either, as there aren’t enough transgender athletes to field full squads in most sports at most schools. Regulatory athletic commissions simply don’t have the solution just yet, and temporary moratoriums would put transgender athletes in limbo.

We don’t have all the answers, but some of these results are raising plenty of questions.
