UFC ON WRONG END OF MIGHTY MOUSE ASKREN TRADE
Looking back at the first trade in MMA history, it was a terrible one for the UFC. The trade took place in 2018 and involved sending UFC flyweight Demetrious Johnson to One FC for welterweight Ben Askren.
Since the trade, Johnson is 3-0 and defeated Danny Kingad for the One bantamweight title. Askren is a generous 1-2 and has retired from MMA to undergo a hip replacement at 35 years of age.
And as of last night, the UFC’s flyweight title is vacant. Point One FC.
Some may argue that Askren’s chin to flying knee technique helped build Jorge Masvidal into the UFC’s next big star, which can’t be denied, but it certainly says a lot when the best thing Askren did for the company was briefly visiting the other side following 5 seconds of fighting.
The whole thing was strange, and I don’t expect to see a lot of trades in the future of MMA. And unless Askren finds an MMA compatible walker to accompany him to the cage, I don’t see him making a comeback. Mighty Mouse will continue to win fights well into the future should he so choose, making One FC the big winner in MMA’s first ever trade.
